Penang as the best tourist destination has been challenged

GEORGE TOWN : Association of tourist attraction penang (Atap) chairman Ch’ng Huck Theng stood up for penang as the Statistics Department (DOSM) did not place Penang in the top 5 popular tourist destinations list in 2022.

“The methodology and the adequacy of the sample size are questionable” he said.In the data for 2022,DOSM listed Selangor as No. 1 with 22 million visitors, followed by the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur (16.9 million), Sarawak (15.5 million), Perak (14.6 million) and Pahang (13.2 million).

He also mentioned that Penang is a state that is rich in arts, culture and the main attractions will be its beverages and environment. Including visiting for entertainment, investment and medical purposes.

“ The definition of a domestic visitor is too wide,” he mentioned that the data is not credible as it can be visitation of friends or returning to hometown.According to DOSM finding, there were 171.6 million domestic visitors, with 207.8 million trips recorded and RM64.1bil in total expenditure.

The year 2019 recorded the highest amount of total domestic tourism expenditure at RM103.2bil while the lowest was in 2021 at RM18.4bil.
